Lameriana Secret Village wine cellar hosts a special collection of Cretan wines from local varieties such as Vilana, Vidiano, Thrapsathiri, Liatikoand more.

Discover the secrets of traditional Cretan home cooking through recipes passed down through generations.
Guests can learn how to prepare authentic local dishes such as lamb with herbs or vegetables, fried snails, rabbit stew, traditional pies with homemade crust and more.

Rethymno 1-15 July, Municipal Garden of Rethymno

Cretan Diet Festival has become an important event in Rethymno and Crete, promoting local products, Cretan culture and the Cretan way of eating, that has received a lot of attention from all over the world as a model of healthy eating. During the festival you can enjoy many cultural events such as concerts, interactive presentations of food and wine tasting.

Tallaia Festival

Municipality of Milopotamos, July – August

Tallea Festival is a complex of cultural events in order to promote creative expression in all artistic fields. The festival is hosted by the Cultural Organization of Tourism and Youth of Milopotamos “The Avlopotamos” in cooperation with the local communities.
It is an annual festival during July and August held in the region of Milopotamos which includes theatrical plays, local music concerts accompanied by local dancers and various exhibitions of photography, hagiography, sculpture, etc.

Renaissance Festival

Fortezza Castle, June – September

Renaissance Festival is an annual festival held in theatre “Erofili” on the fortress of   “Fortezza”. It is a complex of cultural events in order to promote the history of Renaissance literature and music including theatrical plays, music concerts, exhibitions etc. The festival is hosted by the Municipality of Rethymnon.

“Trigos“

“Trigos” is the harvesting of the grapes in order to be processed for the production of wine. Every August and according to weather conditions local producers harvest the grapes in order to make wine and traditional “raki”.
Three festivals take place here every year: Ascension, St. John on June 24 and St. Nicholas on December 6.

Carnival

Every late February/early March, strange and colorful floats decorated in bright and sometimes controversial themes followed by hordes of disguised people create Rethymnon’s carnival. Known as the biggest of its kind in Crete and second in Greece. This is set on a holiday known as “Apokries” (the Greek Halloween). A whole festival is held every year during the last week where the big carnival parade is the highlight of the celebration and great fun for adults and kids alike.

Laiki (Open air market)

“Laiki” is an open air market located in different areas 3 times a week throughout the city of Rethymnon. Local producers and lots of different merchants sell vegetables, fruit, dairy products, clothes, shoes etc.

E4 European Path at Rethymno

E4 consists of two sections – a northern and a southern. The first crosses the border from Chania at the village of Argyroupolis, the south in the area of Rodakino. The two parts meet up at the Nida plateau on Psiloriti – thence the path goes on to the Heraklion Prefecture.  

Both branches again cross areas of significant archaeological, historical and cultural worth. The north branch is recommended to those more interested in Venetian monuments and modern cultural experiences, the southern is appropriate for someone in good physical shape and intrigued more by the Byzantine time.

Hiking on Ai-Lias Hill

Route: The route starts at point A and ends at point B. Its length is about 5km (3.1 miles) and it usually takes around 3.5 hours (yellow line in the image).

The path is rocky and narrow, with thick bushes (some of them thorny) on both sides and with some steep uphill parts. The highest point of the route is 308 m. above sea level, where a short stoppage takes place in order to admire the magnificent view of the villages of the area and the Cretan sea.

Hikers: Participants can walk the route as an organized group in cooperation with the Cultural Club of Achlades, with experienced local hikers in charge. Participants should be either experienced hikers or in a very good physical shape.

The museum is located at a distance of 20 km away of Lameriana. The Museum of ancient Eleutherna – Homer in Crete, the first archaeological site museum in Crete, although smaller in size, are similar to those of Olympia, Delphi and Vergina. The museum created to house the results of the excavations carried out for thirty years in the ancient city of Eleftherna. The originality of this museum is that the objects of the permanent exhibition are updated periodically with new and older finds excavated, so that the public interest is continuous and relates to the discovery and expansion of the excavation work on the site. The exhibition is accompanied by original and modern audiovisual applications.

Sfendoni Cave or Sfendoni’s Hole (Zoniana)

Sfendoni Cave is located near the village of Zoniana (Rethymno Prefecture), at  a  distance of just 25 km from Lameriana. The cave is accessible and one of the most beautiful in Crete but in whole Greece as well, with stalactites and stalagmites.

It has a length of 145m and it is covering an area of about 3.000 square meters. Visitors are allowed to explore the 2/3 of its’ total length on a route of about 270m, along which, they can admire a variety of impressive formations. Large columns create labyrinthine compartments inside the cave and stalactites and stalagmites of different colours and shapes, decorate the cave’s chambers.

Inhabitants of the cave are 4 different kinds of bats and hundreds of invertebrates (molluscs, spiders, scorpions, isopods, diplopods, springtails, etc) some of which are colourless, blind, whereas two kinds only, have been found in Sfendoni Cave as well.

Melidoni Cave

The cave of Melidoni is just 5.8 km far from Lameriana. Melidoni Cave is located about 1.800 metres northwest of the village. It has an extremely interesting history and amazing archaeological findings some of which are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno.​ Melidoni cave is also called “Gerondospilios”. They used it for religious ceremonies.

During the Minoan Civilization, it was a place of worship for Talos. the bronze giant guardian of Crete who protected the island from the enemies.​ It is of archaeological and historical interest. In October 1823 370 women and children and 30 warriors who hid from Hussein Bey sought refuge in Melidoni cave. When he found out, the cave was surrounded by his army and he asked the Cretan people to surrender.   The Cretans denied.  The siege lasted for three months.  After several unsuccessfull attacks, the Othomans decided to cover the entry of the cave with leaves and other flammable substances which they burnt later on.  All women, children and warriors were suffocated.

The Arkadi Monastery

Arkadi Monastery is just 27 km far from Lameriana. It is built on an altitude of 500m, on a fruitful plateau with olive trees, vineyards, pine trees and cypresses.

It’s exact founding date is not known but it is estimated that it was found by emperor Arkadius in the 12th century.  Arkadi Monastery is one of the most important hitorical monasteries of Crete which meant to be the symbol of the Cretans’ struggle for freedom, as it was the place where the tragic holocaust of 1866 took part with the explosion of the wine cellar where the rebels kept the gunpowder.  This was the cause of the future liberation of the Cretans that started in 1898.  Unesco has nominated Arkadi Monastery as a European Monument of Freedom.

Rethymno

Rethymno is the third biggest city in Crete. The old town of Rethymno is one of the nicest places to visit.  Walking around the city is like walking into the past.  The town with its picturesque narrow streets and its beautiful monuments has many buildings from the the Venetian and the Turkish occupation time.  In contrast to Heraklion and Chania, Rethymno has a Greek renaissance character.
Near the old town with the picteresque streets with the gardens and the smells from the flowers, the visitor is worth visiting the biggest castle in Crete, the magnificent Fortezza.  Other monuments are the small Venetian Port with the Light, the Venetian Lotzia, the Rimonti fountain, the Municipal Garden, the Angels Lady, the Historical Museum of Rethymno, the Nerantze Mosque, San Francesco Church, the Big Door, the Mosque of Kara Mousa Pascha and the venetian mansions of Arkadiou Street.  Finally, the visitor may swim in the endless beach of Rethymno which begins east of the port.

Bali village is 9 km far away from Lameriana Hotel. The beach, with the white sand and the green waters, has four bays, which form beaches with calm waters, as they face the West.  They are all kids friendly and well organized with umbrellas and sunbeds.  There are a lot of ground watersprings that make the waters pleasantly cool.

Bali used to be a small fishing village, but over the years has become a quiet tourist village.  It is a very attractive and romantic place, combining the sea with the mountains.  There are a lot of taverns, restaurants, little shops, diving school, bars and discos, as well as a surgery and pharmacy.

PANORMO BEACH

Panormo is 6 km far away from Lameriana.  It is a quiet tourist village, which hasn’t lost its traditional character dispite its development in the recent years.  The picturesque appearance of the village, the beautiful sand beaches and the calm, emerald green waters have played their role on that.

In Panormo there are actually two main beaches and a few smaller ones. As the name implies, Panormos is a natural harbor with calm waters. The harbor “Limanaki” beach in front of the village is the port of the area, under the ruins of Milopotamos Castle.  It is sandy and has clear waters, ideal for children, as it is shallow and well protected from winds with piers, where the boats tie up. It is organized with umbrellas, sunbeds, showers, water sports and other facilities around.

The second main beach named Limni is located just 200m west of the village. Similarly to the harbor beach, it’s a sandy beach, well protected by a rocky pier. Even further to the east, there is a small cove with a pebbly beach, ideal for seclusion and snorkeling.

Geropotamos Beach

Geropotamos is 11 km far away from Lameriana. It is named after the homonymous river that flows into the beach. The small beach is sandy and has clear waters, which are very cool because of the river, which forms a deep pool near the beach. It is organized with umbrellas and a canteen that offers soft drinks, water and snacks. Despite the easy access, it is always quiet and never crowded. However, the orientation of the beach, makes it vulnerable to north winds. The area is of great interest, because of the river, which is a natural shelter  for rare birds and animals. The west coast of Geropotamos is full of caves, where rare Mediterranean monk seals and nesting birds of prey live. The beach lies beneath Geropotamos bridge and can be easily accessed by car.

Afterwards, there is a guided tour of the site which includes the stone mantra, the traditional Mitato (shepherd’s house) and the tyrokeli (natural hole where the hole cheese is kept until it matures). Here follows a short speech about where we are, the history of Mitatos, the special philosophy and culture of the shepherds of Psiloritis.

Then comes home-made food, which is based on appetizers that are typical of Cretan food and hospitality.

The appetizers provided in the above menu are also suitable for people with particularities in food such as  vegan  and gluten intolerant since there is enough options.

In general, the food is specific, but due to the season it may change, such as dolmades in the summer are offered alternatively with pumpkins or the salad may be seasonal greens, for example
